EMDR

At Peninsula Wellness & Therapy, we offer Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) as an evidence-based approach to supporting clients in processing distressing or traumatic experiences. EMDR is a structured, trauma-informed therapy that helps the brain reprocess unhelpful or overwhelming memories so they feel less emotionally intense and less disruptive in daily life.


Rather than focusing on talking through every detail of what happened, EMDR works with how memories are stored in the nervous system. When experiences are overwhelming, the brain can sometimes store them in a “stuck” or unprocessed form, which may continue to trigger anxiety, distress, emotional reactivity, or physical stress responses. EMDR helps the brain reprocess these memories so they can be integrated in a more adaptive and settled way.


EMDR is commonly used to support individuals experiencing:

  • Trauma and post-traumatic stress responses 
  • Anxiety and panic symptoms linked to past experiences 
  • Emotional dysregulation or strong emotional triggers 
  • Distressing or intrusive memories 
  • Phobias or fear-based responses 
  • Difficult or overwhelming life experiences (including relational trauma, medical trauma, or childhood experiences) 


EMDR can be helpful for individuals who feel that past experiences are continuing to impact their present-day wellbeing. It may be particularly beneficial if you:

  • Feel “stuck” in emotional responses that don’t match the present situation 
  • Experience strong triggers or overwhelm linked to past events 
  • Struggle to move forward despite understanding your experiences logically 
  • Prefer a structured, body-and-nervous-system informed approach to trauma processing 


EMDR is always adapted to your pace and readiness, with a strong focus on safety, stability, and emotional grounding throughout the process.


Before beginning EMDR processing, we typically spend time building stability and resourcing skills to ensure you feel grounded and supported. EMDR is not rushed - therapy moves at a pace that prioritises emotional safety and regulation, with ongoing check-ins and collaborative planning throughout.


EMDR can be used as a standalone treatment or integrated into broader therapy work, depending on your needs and goals.
