Navigating adolescence can be a challenging time filled with transitions, peer pressures, and internal struggles. At Peninsula Wellness and Therapy, we specialize in providing compassionate support for teens who are facing mental health challenges. Our approach focuses on equipping teens with practical tools and strategies to navigate these challenges with resilience and confidence.
One key aspect of our approach is helping teens develop greater self-awareness and emotional regulation skills. Through interactive exercises and open discussions, we create a safe space for teens to explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. By fostering a deeper understanding of themselves, teens can develop healthier coping mechanisms and make more informed decisions about their mental health and well-being.
We also emphasize the importance of building strong social and interpersonal skills. For teens, developing positive relationships with peers and adults is crucial for their overall well-being. We provide teens with opportunities to practice communication, empathy, and conflict resolution skills, enabling them to build meaningful connections and support networks.
In addition, we help teens cultivate a sense of purpose and direction in their lives. By exploring their values, interests, and goals, we guide teens in setting meaningful objectives and taking steps towards achieving them. Through this process, teens develop a sense of agency and empowerment, enabling them to navigate life's challenges with confidence and resilience.
Overall, our goal is to provide teens with the support and guidance they need to thrive emotionally, socially, and academically. By empowering them with practical skills and fostering a sense of self-efficacy, we help teens build a strong foundation for lifelong mental health and well-being. If your teen is struggling with mental health issues, we're here to help them discover their inner strengths and unlock their full potential.
The first therapy session will involve speaking to both the adolescent and parent together to gather an understanding of the situation, clarify barriers to wellbeing, discuss expectations of therapy and establish achievable outcomes.
Subsequent sessions will include the therapist and adolescent only. It is important that your adolescent feels safe and comfortable knowing what they say is private and confidential. We respect the rights of adolescents just as we do adults. We encourage parents to join in at the end of each session to review progress and discuss any issues together.
Recommendations of ways in which you can support your adolescent will be given throughout this process and ongoing reviews will be conducted to ensure expectations are being met and progress is being made.
Providing support to your teen throughout the therapy process is crucial. Although they may seem rude, angry, moody and anxious it is important that they know you are there for them. The most common reason teens do not want to attend counselling is due to concerns about privacy, particularly if they have issues and behaviors that they do not want to discuss with family members. Not knowing everything going on in your child's world can be difficult for some parents to deal with however, if your teen does not wish to share with you then being non-judgemental and understanding will go a long way.
Your adolescent has a right to confidentiality, just as we as adults do. It is crucial that your teen knows that their relationship with their counsellor is completely confidential, and that anything they choose to disclose during sessions may only be shared with their consent.
The exceptions to this rule are as follows:
