Gut-directed hypnotherapy

Gut-Directed Hypnotherapy is a specialised, evidence-based treatment that focuses on the powerful connection between the brain and the gut. It has been extensively researched and shown to be highly effective in managing functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs), particularly Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

Unlike traditional talk therapies, this approach targets the subconscious mind, using deeply relaxed states to influence the way the brain and gut communicate—often referred to as the gut-brain axis.

At Gut Wellness & Therapy, we use Gut-Directed Hypnotherapy to support clients in regulating their digestive function, calming the nervous system, and reducing symptom-related distress. During sessions, individuals are guided into a deeply relaxed state where the mind becomes more open to therapeutic suggestions designed to influence gut functioning.

This can help ‘retrain’ the way the brain interprets signals from the gut, breaking the cycle of miscommunication that often drives ongoing discomfort. Research shows that Gut-Directed Hypnotherapy can reduce symptoms for up to 70–80% of individuals with IBS, with long-term benefits extending beyond five years. It is also increasingly used to support individuals with Functional Dyspepsia, nausea, bloating, abdominal pain, and gut-related anxiety.

Common symptoms it can assist with include:

  • Abdominal pain or discomfort
  • Bloating and distension
  • Diarrhoea or constipation (or alternating)
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Urgency and incontinence
  • Functional heartburn or indigestion
  • Anxiety related to eating or bowel habits

By targeting both the physical and psychological contributors to gastrointestinal distress, Gut-Directed Hypnotherapy provides a holistic and empowering path toward symptom relief and improved quality of life.

During Gut-Directed Hypnotherapy sessions, you can expect to be guided into a state of deep relaxation where your body feels calm and your mind remains alert and focused. In this state, your therapist will use soothing imagery, gentle suggestions, and targeted metaphors designed to improve the communication between your brain and gut. The process is collaborative and non-invasive, and you remain in full control throughout each session. Many clients find the experience deeply calming, and over time, this therapeutic approach can help to retrain how your brain perceives and responds to gut sensations—reducing symptoms, easing distress, and promoting a greater sense of control over your digestive health.
